[Weiboxin] Beware of Gattavirus (GETV): An Invisible Threat to Pig Farms and Scientific Prevention and Control Strategies

Recently, Getah virus (GETV) has shown an outbreak trend in pig farms across multiple regions, posing a serious threat to the swine industry. This arbovirus, transmitted by mosquitoes, can cause high mortality in piglets and reproductive disorders in sows, resulting in substantial economic losses.
1
Understanding the Geta Virus: An Ominous Pathogen That Should Not Be Ignored
Gentian virus (GETV) belongs to the genus Alphavirus within the family Togaviridae and is a Single-stranded positive-sense RNA virus , possessing an envelope structure. As an arbovirus, GETV is primarily transmitted through Biting by mosquitoes (such as Culex and Aedes) It is transmitted among vertebrates.

Since the virus was first isolated from mosquitoes in Hainan in 1964, its geographic distribution has gradually expanded. Prior to 2006, only six provinces in China had reported the detection of GETV; by 2018, the number of affected provinces had surged to 16.
Currently, GETV is deployed across a vast region stretching from the northeast to the southwest and from the southeast to the northwest.

2
Clinical manifestations: diverse and severely harmful
Clinical signs of GETV infection in pigs vary depending on age and physiological status:
· Newborn piglets : Brownish-yellow diarrhea, anorexia, skin erythema, tongue tremor, limb ataxia, and death may occur. The mortality rate can exceed 80%.
· Piglets older than 10 days : It typically manifests as mental depression, fever (with body temperature reaching over 40°C), decreased appetite, and a significant reduction in daily weight gain.

· Pregnant sows : The primary clinical manifestation is reproductive failure syndrome, encompassing miscarriage, stillbirth, and mummified fetuses. The miscarriage rate may range from 15% to 25%, with most cases occurring between 60 and 90 days of gestation; the stillbirth rate may be between 10% and 15%.
· Neurological symptoms : In severe cases of infection, pigs may develop extremely high fevers that are unresponsive to conventional antipyretics, accompanied by neurological signs such as circling, opisthotonus, and sudden seizures. Mortality among nursing piglets can be as high as 50% to 70%.
Common in clinical necropsy Cyanosis, diarrhea, thinning of the intestinal wall, lymphadenopathy, renal cortical hemorrhage, pulmonary hemorrhage, and subcutaneous edema. 。

The clinical symptoms of GETV infection are easily confused with those of Japanese encephalitis and diarrhea, making timely and accurate laboratory diagnosis essential.
3
Current Epidemiological Situation: Expanded Scope and Strain Variation
In recent years, GETV has shown a clear trend of widespread dissemination in China. According to surveillance data from the National Center for Animal Disease Control and Prevention in 2023, The proportion of pig farms testing positive for GETV has reached 12.7%. 。
In the summer of 2024, a large-scale GETV outbreak occurred in Henan Province, affecting 12 cities and 21 counties, with infections reported at multiple pig farms. This outbreak was caused by A virulence-enhanced variant of genotype GIII This was associated with unique amino acid mutations identified through whole-genome sequencing—P329S, A381T, and V503G in the nsP3 protein, as well as D323E in the E2 protein—which markedly enhanced viral pathogenicity.

Phylogenetic analysis indicates that all currently circulating strains belong to genotype GIII and form a distinct clade separate from the GDHYLC23 strain. Genotype GIII is currently the predominant circulating genotype in Asia; however, the variant identified in this study exhibits significantly enhanced virulence compared with previously reported, relatively mild strains.
4
Control Measures: Integrated Pest Management is Key
In the face of the threat posed by GETV, pig farms should implement comprehensive prevention and control measures:
1. Immunization
Immunizing swine herds before the mosquito and insect season begins is an important measure for preventing GETV6. The recommended immunization schedule includes:
· Breeding Pig Farm: Primary immunization (8 weeks before breeding) + prenatal booster immunization (at 90 days of gestation).
· Commercial Pig Farm: First vaccination at 7–14 days of age, followed by a second vaccination at 21–28 days of age.
· High-incidence areas for the epidemic: Consider administering an additional dose of immunization (7 days after weaning).

Note: Currently, the GETV vaccine for pigs has not yet been commercialized; the above recommendations are based on general principles for the control of arboviruses and on findings from certain studies. For practical applications, please closely monitor developments in vaccine research and development and official guidance.
2. Mosquito-borne Disease Prevention and Control
Cutting off transmission routes is key to prevention and control. Therefore:
· Remove standing water to reduce mosquito and insect breeding sites;
· Install mosquito screens and conduct regular environmental disinfection;
· Use insecticides to control mosquito populations.
3. Strengthen Feeding Management and Biosecurity
· Improve pig herd management and enhance disease resistance;
· During introduction, strict testing is required, with a negative GETV certificate mandated, and the quarantine observation period is extended to 21 days.
· Strictly implement disinfection measures for personnel and vehicles.

4. Monitoring and Diagnosis
· Establish a GETV sentinel surveillance system at pig farms, with a focus on testing mosquito and pig herd samples;
· Increase GETV nucleic acid testing on samples from aborted sows and weak piglets;
· Report any suspected symptoms to the veterinary authorities promptly and cooperate with sample collection and testing.
